Sylvia enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service on 16 Jun 1943 in Claremont. On 20 Jun 1943 she was transferred to the 6th AWS Training Company at the Claremont Teachers College. Following training she was posted to the 10th Ordnance Stores Company. On 20 Jun 1943 she was classified as a Typist TG III. However, on 6 Sep 1943 she was admitted to 1st Australian Women's Hospital with mania and two days later she was discharged to the Heathcote Psychiatrics Hospital.
