Brief History
Signals units provided installation, maintenance and administration of communication facilities for RAAF units. Detachments were sent to a range of locations in Australian and New Guinea to install communications equipment as well as providing cypher facilities and ground to air communication equipment for Squadrons.
No.1 Signals Unit was formed in January 1942 and arrived in the Northern Territory in early January 1943 to provide services for RAAF HQs North West Australia at 58 Mile. In August 1943 it moved a group of personnel and equipment to Groote Eylant. It carried out a calibration and location survey of the Cox Peninsular in September 1943 before the cessation of plain language transmissions later that month.
Unit personnel moved to Fenton on 1 Dec 1943 and it also had personnel at Batchelor, Gove, Truscott, Coomalie, Tyndal, Gorrie and Darwin. It ceased to function on 22 Aug 1944.
