WW 1 Service
Austin enlisted for service as a 25 year old on 6 Oct 1914 with Regimental Number 194. Allocated to the 10th Light Horse Regiment, in Egypt he was admitted to the No 2 General Hospital on 26 Mar 1915. He later joined \his unit at Anzac Cove on 5 Aug 1915, but was soon in action, resulting in him receiving a Gun Shot Wound to his left thigh / pelvis - classified as severe on 15 Aug 1915 in the trenches on Russell's Top. He was evacuated and on 25 Aug 1915 and later transferred by HMHS Tagus to the 3rd London General Hospital at Wandsworth where he was admitted on 28 Sep 1915. On recovery he was sent home to Australia on HMAT A29 Suevic, arriving in Fremantle on 11 Mar 1916, and discharge followed on 12 Apr 1916. He was granted a pension of 30/- per fortnight from 20 Sep 1916. This was reduced to 20/- per fortnight from 14 Feb 1918
