On 22 Mar 1942 William enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps in Armadale and was taken on strength by the [[2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion]]. On 1 Jul 1942 he was appointed Lance Corporal, and on 23 Sep 1942 he was promoted Corporal. With the rest of his unit he was placed in reserve on 1 May 1945.
