John was mobilised into the CMF on 3 Apr 1942, and on 30 Apr 1942 he was allocated Western Command Bulk Issue Petrol and Oil Depot before being called up for full time service on 27 Apr 1942. From 29 Jun 1942 until 19 Jul 1942 John was detached to the 29th Australian Garrison Battalion at Salter Point. John enlisteed in the 2nd AIF on 24 Sep 1942.
On 10 Oct 1942 John was admitted to the 118th Australian General Hospital, returning to his unit on 29 Oct 1942, and remained withthem until he was granted leaved from 7 - 14 Mar 1943.
