Brief History

Previously known as Operational Base Fall River, and then Operational Base Gurney, this unit operated at Milne Bay. The strip was the first one built at Milne Bay, and was constructed by US Engineers. On 23 Aug 1944 Gurney Strip was closed for major repairs and all operations were moved to Turnbull Strip. The work was undertaken by the US Army's 867th and 869th Engineer (Aviation) Battalions, with repairs completed by 30 Nov 1944.


On 14 Oct 1944 a detachemt of No. 43 OBU took over responsibility for control of the Moronda Strip at Dobodura. The unit was disbanded on 25 Jan 1946.
