On 31 Aug 1941 Stanley enlisted in the Militia and was posted to the 25th Australian Reconnaissance Battalion and served as a Corporal before being discharged on 2 Oct 1942 in order to enlist in the RAAF on 13 Oct 1942 at the No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre as a General Hand .
The next day he began a Basic Drill course which he completed on 5 Nov 1942 before being posted to [[
