Pre War

War Service

Fred enlisted in the CMF on 29 Aug 1940 and was allocated to the CMF's 11th Battalion. He attended a camp of 70 days duration from 1 Oct until 9 Dec 1940 before enlisting in the 2nd AIF at the Claremont camp on 29 Apr 1941. On 2 May 1941 Fred was transferred to the No. 3 Training battalion at Northam, and three days later he was sent on pre-embarkation leave until 11 May 1941. On 9 September he embarked on HMT Queen Mary in Fremantle for the Middle East as part of Convoy US 12A. On 23 Sep 1941 they disembarked and Fred was sent to the 21st Australian Infantry Training Battalion to begin his training. On 24 Oct 1941 he was transferred to the 19th Australian Infantry Training Battalion before joining the 2/11th Australian Infantry Battalion on 22 Nov 1941.


On 16 Feb 1942 Fred and his unit embarked on HMT Durban Castle, disembarking in Adelaide on 17 Mar 1942. Following leave and a period based in Adelaide they departed for Queensland on 13 Jul 1943. On 5 Nov 1944 the battalion embarked on HMT Katoomba for Aitape in New Guinea where they disembarked on 13 Nov 1944. Fred remained with the 2/11th Battalion for the rest of the war.
