Almost destroyed in a fire in the US Hobken Docks on 30 Jun 1900 soon after her launch, she was refloated, refitted and entered service on 15 Oct 1901.
Worked the Bremen to US routes until 1914 with the last voyage of Main from Bremen to Baltimore in June 1914. Seized by the Allied forces in Antwerp, but in October she was returned to Germany. Following the war, on 21 May 1919 she was awarded to the British Shipping Controller, and used to repatriate troops. On 30 Jun 1921 she was transferred to the French Government and laid up prior to her being scrapped in 1925.
