War Service

On entering Blackboy Hill camp, John was initially allocated to the 7th reinforcement draft for the 48th Battalion, and then to the 8th draft for the 51st Battalions before on 23 Sep 1916 when he was deemed more suitable for as a Pioneer reinforcement, and was allocated to the 7th reinforcement draft for the 5th Pioneer Battalion.

Travelled to England aboard HMAT A8 Argyllshire, and was sent to the Pioneer Training Battalion at Larkhill for training. Here a Medical Board on 5 Feb 1917 classified him as 'C3'. On 5 Mar 1917 his missing thumb on his right hand became an issue and he was sent to No. 2 Command Depot in Weymouth for return to Australia for 'Home Service'.
