On 4 Jan 1917 Edwin was admitted to the ship's hospital for 6 days, illness not stated. On arrival in England he was sent to the 4th Training Battalion at Codford to prepare for France. However, soon after on 26 Feb 1917, he was admitted to the Group Hospital at Codford with pleurisy, but after two days was released back to training.

On 8 Mar 1917 he was again admitted, this time to the Sutton Veny Military Hospital with pleurisy, this time dangerously ill. He remained in hospital until 1 Jun 1917 when he was released to No 2 Command Depot at Weymouth.

Returned to Australia without entering France. While waiting to be discharged he was sent to the Wooroloo Sanitorium, where on 11 Nov 1917 he was charged with beign AWOL from 8:30pm to 9:10pm, and with Refusing to obey an order. Sentence was a Reprimand. Discharged by 5th Military District on 21 Dec 1917 as unfit (TB of lungs). Placed on a pension of 30/- per fortnight, granted from 22 Dec 1917.
