War Service
On 9 Feb 1945 Walter was sent to Sydney to undertake training, joining the 1st Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion on 19 Feb 1945. On 30 Apr 1945 he was then sent to the Australian Central Signals Training Battalion at Bonegilla in Victoria. Completing the initial course, on 20 Jul 1945 he was sent to NSW to undertake the Aerial Line Course number 56 with 2 ATTD. On completion of that course he returned to the 1st Australian Signals Training Battalion at Bonegilla on 4 Sep 1945.
On 5 Feb 1946 he was posted to the BCOF Signals unit then being formed in Bonegilla, and on 26 Feb 1946 he transferred to the 4th Australian Multi Channel Wireless Section, a part of the HQ Signals BCOF. They embarked on the SS Pachaug Victory in Sydney on 29 Mar 1946, and sailed for Kure in Japan, arriving there on 13 Apr 1946. On 9 May 1946 his proficiency pay was withdrawn and he was regraded Line Mechanic Grade 1.
On 9 Jul 1947 he was admitted to the 130th Australian General Hospital with Otitis Externa Bilateral. Following treatment he was discharged to his unit on 26 Jul 1947. On 2 Nov 1947 he was transferred on paper to the Western Australian Line of Command, and two days later he boarded the HMAS Kanimbla in Kure for Sydney, which was reached on 18 Nov 1947. Placed on a train he arrived in Perth on 30 Nov 1947 and the next day he was admitted to the Hollywood Repatriation Hospital before being discharged on 8 Dec 1947.
