War Service
Enlisted in the CMF on 3 Mar 1942 at Swanbourne and allocated to the 5th Australian Garrison Battalion. On 21 May 1942 Archie was appointed Lance Corporal. He was granted Special Leave from 3 - 17 July; 20 - 22 August; and 21 - 23 December in 1942 and then from 13 Feb to 27 Mar 1943. On 10 Aug 1943 Archie was admitted to 110th Australian Base Hospital with a fracture right large toe, returning to the 5th Garrison Battalion on 17 Aug 1943. Granted Special Leave again from 9 - 30 Sep 1943, and on 27 Nov 1943 he was transferred to the 113th Australian Mobile Bath Unit.
Archie departed Western Australia on 7 Dec 1943 for the Northern Territory, arriving there on 14 Dec 1943. There, on 14 Jan 1944 he was transferred to the 10th Australian Anti Malaria Control Unit, reverting to Private at that time. On 10 Mar 1944 he was detached for duty to the 129th Australian General Hospital before returning to his unit on 8 Dec 1944.
Archie was again granted Leave Without Pay, this time from 5 Feb until 2 Apr 1945, to be spent in Western Australia, but was discharged on 21 Feb 1945, with his orchard responsibilities seemingly more important than his military ones.
