Remarks
Built for the Union Castle Line, she was used on the Southampton to Cape Town route. She had accommodation for 250 first class passengers, and 140 second class passengers (aft). From 1910 she was partially retired to the role of reserve steamer to RMS Balmoral Castle.
Four years later she entered service as a Hospital Ship, operating from 3 Sep 1914 to 26 Aug 1919. She carried 12 Nurses and 38 other ranks to service up to 16 Officer patients, 196 Cots and 227 berths (439 beds). She also at times carried troops in the Mediterranean.
In late 1919 she returned to the Cape Town route until her replacement the RMS Windsor Castle was completed, when she was laid up at Netley in 1922.
