Ernest enlisted in the RAAF at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre on 16 Jun 1942, mustered as a General Hand - Works. later the same day he was sent to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF to undertake No. P167 Recruit Drill Course. On completion he was posted to No. 77 Squadron RAAF which was moving to the Northern Territory.
