Pre War

Before arriving in Australia, William had served for 3 years in the East Riding Yorkshire Yeomanry. 25 year old William sailed to Fremantle aboard SS Ionic departing from Plymouth.

Electoral Roll entries - 1916 farmer at Kelmscott.

War Service

In Australia, in Apr 1916 William was sent on an NCOs Course and on 10 May 1916 he was allocated to the 19th reinforcement draft for the 11th Battalion where he was made Acting Corporal.

He was admitted to the Devonport Military Hospital on arrival in England (25 Sep 1916). It would appear that while convalescing he married 27 year old Esther Turner on 4 Nov 1916 in St Peters Harrogate, Yorkshire. on 11 Dec 1916 he was taken on strength by the 3rd Training Battalion at Durrington, and on 22 Jan 1917 he acted as Sergeant (unpaid) for a period before moving in Apr 1917 to the No 2 Command Depot in Weymouth.

William was assessed as requiring a medical discharge as permanently unfit for service at home or abroad due to him suffering with Cerebral Spinal Meningitis. Therefore, prior to his discharge he served in training and administrative roles in depot units in England, and never did join the 11th Battalion proper. He faced a Medical Board at the Monte Video Camp in Weymouth which found him permanently unfit for service at home or abroad, but gave no details.

He accepted discharge in the UK on 22 Jun 1917, and remained there (8 Albert street, Harrogate, Yorkshire) for a time as he had married while in England. Esther arrived in Australia by ship on 20 Mar 1918.

Post War

Electoral Roll entries - 1919 - 37 his and Esther's address was "Redmire", Bendering, via Corrigin, WA; 1943 William at 174 Crawford road, East Perth, assessor; 1943 River road, Kelmscott, farmer; 1949 - 1958 at 1 Church street Kelmscott, retired with Marjorie (sister from 1954) Esther died in 12 Oct 1938 in Corrigin, aged 50 and is buried at Corrigin.
