Early Life

William Butcher was born to a soldiering family in the year 1829. William, aged just 12 years, found himself on a sailing ship, “Sterling”, bound for the Swan River Colony in Western Australia, where he arrived on March 14th 1841. Began his working life around Gingin and later became a sandalwood carter down the Fremantle - Albany road.

Marriage

Married Mary Ann Houghton on the 22 July 1852 at the Church of England of Ellensbrook (now All Saints Church, Upper Swan). The children of Mary Ann and William were: William, Sarah Anne, Alfred, Hugh John, Walter, James, Alice and Albert.

Community Contribution

Death

On the 9 April 1908, William died aged 79 and was buried with Mary Ann (Marian) at the old Anglican Church Cemetery, Kelmscott.
