During 1938 Bill married Nancy Eileen Whitford (1912 - 1988)
War Service
Prior to enlisting in the CMF on 21 Feb 1942, Bill had served with the Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC). He was called up for full time duty from 13 Apr 1942 until 9 Mar 1943 when at Noonamaah in the Northern Territory he changed enlistment to the 2nd AIF. On17 Apr `942 Bill was sent to the 13th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Northam where on 21 May 1942 Bill was admitted to the 118th Australian General Hospital. He returned to his unit on 29 May 1942. On 29 Jun 1942 Bill was sent to the Motor Transport Wing until 22 Jul 1942 when he was admiytyed to the 38th Australian Camp Hospital. Bill returned to his unit on 30 Jul 1942.
On 7 AUg 1942 he was reported to be sick at home, bu ton 15 AUg 1942 a Warrant was issued for his arrest on the grounds of Desertion. On his return to his unit on 7 Aug 1942 he had a medical certificate signed by loccal Dr Streich, and the Court of Enquiry was cancelled.
