Pre War
Suffered with a hernia, and had had it operated on. Edward had been a member of the Jarrahdale Rifle Club for 5 years.
War Service
Enlisted and found to be fit by a preliminary medical exam at Jarrahdale on 13 Feb 1916, Edward reported to the Blackboy Hill camp on 8 Mar 1916 and was placed in the 55th Depot Company. Provisionally allocated to the 19th reinforcement draft for the 16th Battalion, on 3 Jul 1916 he was seen by an Australian Medical Corps unit in Claremont who diagnosed a vascular problem and he was referred to the 8th Australian General Hospital in Fremantle the same day.
Suffered with palpitations and shortness of breath, the recommendation of the Medical Board was discharge on medical grounds - disability a pre existing vascular disease of the heart.
Discharged as permanently unfit on 27 Jul 1916.
