the 1st Australian Detention Barracks was formed in March 1940 at Jerusalem by a detachment from the Australian Overseas Base Provost Company. The unit was expanded in October/November 1941, and split to also form the 2nd Australian Detention Barracks at Hill 69 in Palestine, and 3rd Australian Detention Barracks at Nuseirat, south of Gaza. The unit returned to Australia in April 1942, and were renamed 2/1st Australian Detention Barracks.
Re-established following some leave, the unit gathered at Grovely in Queensland where they worked with the 'Queensland Lines of Communication Area Detention barracks. In January 1943 they absorbed the Queensland unit, continuing to operate from Grovely until the end of the war.
