Brief History
3rd CRE (Works) was formed during September 1942 in Sydney as part of a re-organisation of the RAE Works Service to manage projects in the Katherine area of the Northern Territory. They arrived there in October and controlled works between Larrimah and Adelaide River, with oversite of units such as 20th Army Field Company, 2/2nd Field Company, 6th Army Troops Company, 2/11th Army Troops Company and 9th Workshop & Park Company. Units under their control changed as tasks required until March 1944 when they were relieved.
In April 1944 they had moved to Swan Barracks in Perth, with responsibility for all works in Western Australia. Units under their control were 66th DCRE at Northam, 67th DCRE at Karrakatta, 68th DCRE at Fremantle, 69th DCRE at Karrakatta, with 62nd Corps Field Park Company, 12th Workshop & Park Company at Karrakatta, and 8th Anti Aircraft & Fortress Company at Fremantle. With the reduction in troops in Western Australia some of these units moved east while others were disbanded between July and October 1944.
Some units remained to service those troops still in Western Australia until the end of the war, i.e. the66th DCRE at Northam, 68th DCRE at Fremantle, 12th Workshop & Park Company at Karrakatta and the 8th Anti Aircraft & Fortress Company at Fremantle.
