Brief History

Due to the number of men moving through Townsville, in November 1943 the 13th Australian Personnel Staging Camp]] at Oonoonba was split to form an new Staging Camp Townsville located at Smyths Siding south of Townsville to receive those troops returning from overseas. They were to de-equip the troops and then send them south on leave, or to the various camps on the Atherton Tableland. In January 1944 the unit was renamed Leave & Transit Depot (Julago), and then in March they became 19th Australian Personnel Staging Camp. Capacity in March 1945 was 1,500 men, and their activities continued till the end of the war.
