Brief History

In August 1942 the former Southern Command Signals Training Unit and the Eastern Command Signals Training Unit joined in Bonegilla to from 1st Australian Signals Training Battalion. (Their recruit training sections joined to form 1st Signals Recruit Training Battalion.) Within the new Signals Training Battalion 1 Company undertook basic signals work, and 2 Company provided training for particular signals trades, and 3 Company provided collective training and held signallers awaiting posting. The holding function was transferred in December 1943 to a new '4 Company', and with all recruits now receiving common training, in February 1944 the recruit training Company was absorbed. '4 Company' was disbanded in August 1944 with '3 Company' again providing the holding role. The parent unit 1st Australian Signals Training Battalion continued to operate at Bonegilla until the end of the war.
