Brief History

This unit was formed in September 1941 at Northam, Western Australia to be attached to the 2/10th Armored Regiment, subsequently moving with them to Puckapunyal in Victoria in October to join the 2nd Armoured Brigade Group. Here they undertook training until they moved to Greta in New South Wales in June 1942 as part of the 1st Armoured Division. In July they moved to Wee Waa on exercises before a re-organisation of armoured forces saw them move first to Gunnedah in October and then in January 1943 to Mingenew in Western Australia with the 2/10th Armoured Regiment as part of the 1st Armoured Division. In August they were in Moora, and then, following the disbanding of both the Division and the Brigade Group, the 2/96th LAD moved to Chermside in Queensland. Here they joined the 10th Base Workshop at Moorooka in February 1945 before they were disbanded in May 1945.
