Brief History

Formed as the 1st Fortress Company AAMC in June 1940 at Lytton in Queensland to support the Brisbane Fixed defences, they had detachments at Fort Cowan, Fort Bribie and Townsville as coastal defences were established. called up for full time duty in April 1941, a detachment moved to Chermside to provide a dressing station in May until relieved in August. In February 1942 a detachment was established at Tabragalba and in October the unit was re-organised as 71st Australian Camp Hospital which in November moved to Tabragalba. In June 1943, they left a Regimental Aid Post at Tabragalba with the rest of the unit moving back to Lytton. In March 1944 they had moved to Bribie Island and the in August to Toorbul Point, servicing the Bribie island units from there until the end of the war.
