On 1 Sep 1942 he was posted to the AAMC Training Depot at Northam on strength as a Medical Corps reinforcement. On 19 Mar 1943 Alan was posted to the 118th Australian General Hospital. On 13 Apr 1945 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF in New South Wales before embarking with his unit in Brisbane aboard SS Montoro on 24 Jul 1945.
