Pre War

During early 1940 Albert married Evelyn Mary Thompson (1922 - 2013) in the local area. Electoral Roll entries: 1943 at Fremantle road, Armadale, labourer.

War Service

Original enlistment was part time in the CMF at Victoria Park with the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment ww2 from 8 Aug 1940. He was allocated to the HQ Squadron, Machine Gun Troop. From 7 Jul 1941 until 4 Oct 1941 he was in training camp and then on 17 Dec 1941 he was called up for full time service. Albert was then granted LWOP from 16 Jan until 28 Jul 1942 as he had skills that qualified as Essential Services. During this time he had enlisted in the 3rd (Swan) VDC Battalion from 26 Apr 1942 until he enlisted again in the CMF.


Returning to full time duty, Alfred was sent on 5 Aug 1942 to the 13th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Northam, and on 10 Aug 1942 he was transferred to the AASC Training Depot. Moved again, on 18 Aug 1942 he was sent back to the Light Horse Training Squadron. On 4 Oct 1942 Albert was charged with having been AWOL from midnight until 9:00pm the next day. Punishment awarded to him was a fine of 10/- ($1) and the loss of a day's pay. On 15 Oct 1942 he joined the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment ww2 before being granted LWOP from 23 Jan to 10 Apr 1943. On his return he was again AWOL, this time for two days , and Albert was fined £1 ($2), with the loss of two day's pay.


On 8 Jun 1943 he was treated for tinea by the 105th Australian Light Field Ambulance who referred him on to the 108th Australian Casualty Clearing Station who treated him from 9 Jun until 18 Jul 1943 returning to his unit on 19 Jul 1943. On 22 Feb 1944 Albert was transferred to the 3rd Australian Corps Training Centre (Jungle Warfare). Back with the 10th Light Horse he was again AWOL for 2 days earning a £3 ($6) fine and loss of two days pay, before entraining on 12 May 1944 for New South Wales. On arrival (28th May) he was with the 1st Australian Base Depot - Personnel, before being sent to the 16th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Bathurst on 7 Jun 1944. On 19 Jan 1945 Albert has been seen by a Medical Board and was reclassified as 'B2', which resulted in him being sent back to Western Australia where as a result of an accident while with the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot he was hospitalised between the 18th and 25th of April in the 110th Australian Base Hospital with second degree burns. Recovered he was discharged on 21 May 1945.
