Albert entered Blackboy Hill camp on 30 Oct 1916 and on 16 Nov 1916 he was allocated to the 7th reinforcement draft for the 44th Battalion. However, on 2 Dec 1916 this was changed to the 8th draft for the 48th Battalion, and later that month he embarked with them for England. During the voyage Albert had need of medical help from the ship's hospital from 30 Jan to 2 Feb 1917.
On arrival in England he was sent to Sutton Mandeville, where on 27 Feb 1917 he was admitted to the Fovant Military Hospital with pleurisy. He was discharged from hospital on 7 Apr 1917 and entered the 12th Training Battalion at Codford. He required another brief period in hospital at Codford from 10 May 1917, and then training completed, he proceeded overseas to France via Southampton on 22 Jul 1917.
In France he spent some time with the 4th Division's Base Depot before being taken on strength by the 48th Battalion in the Wytschaete area on 12 Aug 1917. He remained with them until he was granted leave on 14 Mar 1918. Albert returned from leave on 3 Apr 1918 and rejoined the battalion. However, on 3 Aug 1918 he badly sprained his left ankle and he sought help from the 4th Field Ambulance who passed him back to the 47th Casualty Clearing Station the same day.
On 7 Jun 1918 they in turn sent him on Ambulance Train No 41 to the 6th General Hospital in Rouen, where he was admitted on 8 Jun 1918. On 10 Jun 1918 he was evacuated to England and admitted to the Horton War Hospital in Epsom on 12 Jun 1918 before being discharged to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital Dartford on 6 Jul 1916. Here he was granted furlough from 6 - 20 Jul 1918 before reporting to the 3rd Command Depot at Hurdcott. Reclassified, he remained with them until he entered the 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital at Bulford on 5 Dec 1918, where he received treatment until 23 Dec 1918 for Venereal Disease (19 days non effective service).
Albert was discharged by the 5th Military District on 13 Jun 1919 as medically unfit.
Post War
During 1929 Albert married Amanda Olga Kuhne in Victoria.
