Alexander Fancote (29 May 1877 - 01 November 1942), was the 4th son of Charles and Caroline Fancote (nee Buckingham).

Early Life

Alexander Fancote, or Alex as he was known, was born on 29 May in 1877. Alex, along with his siblings grew up in Kelmscott, attending the local school. Alex’s childhood home was on Albany Highway Kelmscott, near the railway station.

Marriage

In 1908, Alex married Florence Hammond in the Church here. Four children were born but sadly two of the children died very early, one at 10 weeks and the other as a 1 year old.

Community Contribution

Alex did however serve the community. He was a member of the Armadale-Kelmscott Roads Board from 1900-1902. In a further nomination, he lost the election by just 6 votes to Armadale’s Edwin Higgs. Higgs immediately successfully moved for all Roads Board meetings to henceforth be held in Armadale, instead of Kelmscott. This was an example of the great divide there’s always been between the two towns.

Death

Alex died suddenly in Collie in 1942. A memorial tablet for Alex was dedicated in the Church here, on the first anniversary of his death.

Fancote Street honours the contribution of the Fancote family to this area.
