Pre War

Alwyn had served in the CMF from 1916 until 1920. Electoral Roll entries: 1925 at Cunderdin, farmhand; 1926 at 31 Victoria avenue, North Fremantle, labourer; 1931 at Chapman road, Geraldton, labourer; 1934 - 1937 c/o H.D. Larwood, Helena Valley, labourer; 1943 at Bedfordale, gardener.

War Service

Alwyn enlisted in the RAAF at the No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre on 16 Jun 1942, mustered as a General Hand - Works. The same day he was posted to the No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF to undedrtake a Recruit Drill Course, and following training, as a General Hand he was posted on 13 Aug 1942 to No. 4 Service Flying Training School RAAF at Geraldton where on 16 Dec 1942 he was appointed a Leading Aircraftman. He had a brief posting from 16 Oct 1942 to 2 Nov 1942 with the No. 2 Mobile Works Squadron RAAF.


On completion of the No. 5 Salvage Course, held between 19 April and 10 May 1943, Alwyn was sent to the No. 5 Embarkation Depot RAAF in Subiaco. However, rather than go overseas, on 19 May 1943 he was posted to No. 4 Aircraft Depot RAAF in Kalgoorlie and he remained with them until 29 Apr 1944 when he was posted to the staff of No. 5 School of Technical Training RAAF, reverting to Aircraftman, as he was remustered as a Cook having completed a 12 week Trainee Cooks course. On 24 Oct 1944 he was again promoted Leading Aircraftman and on 12 Dec 1944 Alwyn married Grace Charlotte Hort. In late 1944 and early 1945 he was detached as a cook for short periods to a number of units including No. 25 (City of Perth) Squadron RAAF from 31 Jan 1945 until he joined them on posting on 19 Apr 1945. He remained with them until 5 Jul 1945 when he was posted to Air Defence HQ Broome RAAF, outposted to the No. 329 Radar Station RAAF. Three months later on 16 Oct 1945 Alwyn was posted to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF where he took his discharge the next day at his request to work for JH Davies at Dalwallinu.
