Brief History
It is likely that Fortress Signals, Fremantle was formed as a unit within Western Command Signals in late 1940 serving the newly amalgamated coast artillery units at Fremantle. Based at North Fremantle they manned communications between the guns on the mainland and Rottnest Island as well as the searchlight units and observation posts. As new gun positions were built in 1942, the signals unit expanded. In September 1945 they absorbed Fortress Signals, Albany and 5th Garrison Brigade Signals to form Ant-Aircraft & Fortress Signals, Western Area with 1 Company at Fremantle, 2 Company at Rottnest Island and 3 Company on Garden Island. Signals HQ and 1 Company moved to Melville in February 1944. With most of the guns in care and maintenance by late 1944, Anti-Aircraft & Fortress Signals, Western Area maintained only enough signals staff to maintain equipment and to operate if required in an emergency.
