War Service

Entered Blackboy Hill camp on 9 Sep 1914, and he was allocated to 'B 'Company of the 11th Battalion that was then forming up for service overseas. Completed training in Australia without incident and travelled to Egypt in the 1st Convoy aboard HMAT A7 Medic, landing at Alexandria and travelling by train to Mena camp at the foot of the Great Pyramid. Arthur became ill before Christmas Day with influenza and was in the care of the Field Ambulance until Christmas Day. Thought to be well, he was discharged, but three days later he collapsed on parade and at that time had pains all over him - in all his joints. On 3 Jan 1915 Arthur was admitted to the 2nd Australian General Hospital with rheumatism. His stay overseas was very brief as he was sent home with the returning transport ships.

Discharged by the 5th Military District on 10 Apr 1916 and granted a pension. On 11 Apr 1916 it was 30/- per fortnight ($3), an increase from 20/- ($2).
