While Basil had his medical on 19 Jun 1940 and was found to be fir for Class I service, he did not enlist at the Claremont camp until 18 Oct 1940. On 22 Oct 1940 he was sent to the Ascot camp, and then on 25 Nov 1940 to the No 1 Depot Battalion at Northam. There, on 5 Dec 1940 he was taken on strength by the 2/4 Machine Gun Battalion.
