Birth

Bertram Hugo Cornish was born in 1879 in Hamilton, Victoria.

Family

Bert's parents were Edward Cornish and Charlotte Cornish (nee Jones). One of his many siblings was his older brother Albert Cornish (born 1870) who was a manager of the Armadale Brickworks and a member of the Armadale-Kelmscott Road Board.

With Bert having a brother named Albert living in the same district (who in turn had a son named Albert), some newspaper articles mis-report who is who, making clarification and research difficult. It is believed that Bertram Hugo Cornish may have also had a son named Bert Cornish Jr, complicating matters further.

Bert married Eva Grace in 1906.

Life in the Armadale district

Bert was President of the Westfield Progress Association, prior to moving to Cardup. He was a popular MC at local events, including dances for the Armadale P&C Association. He reportedly was the manager for Millars Timber and Trading Company. Bert also may have been a Brickworks manager, like his older brother Albert Cornish, at Cardup rather than Armadale.
