Pre War
War Service
Enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service at Perth on 15 April 1943 as Betty Jean Collins. Three days later she was transferred to the 6th AWS Training Company until 10 May 1943 when she was entrained for the 2nd Australian Signals Training Battalion (AWAS) in Victoria.
On 2 Jul 1943 Betty was admitted to the 73rd Australian Camp Hospital (also known as Camp Hospital Fishermans Bend) returning to her unit on 5 Jul 1943. On 12 Aug 1943 she was again admitted to the 73rd Australian Camp Hospital, this time remaining in their care a little longer, until 27 Aug 1943. On 15 Apr 1944 Betty was entitled to Adult pay as she had completed 12 months service, and on 28 Apr 1944 Betty married SX21343 Kenneth P Murphy.
Betty was transferred around Signals units in northern Queensland that collectively went through many name changes. She was to spend most of her time with the 57th Operating Section which in 1944 was a sub unit of the 25th Australian Line of Communication Signals. On 4 Apr 1945 Betty transferred from signals to the South Australian Line of Communication Area Recruit Reception & General Duties Depot for discharge which took place on 19 Apr 1945 due to pregnancy.
