On 1 Jun 1916 he was earmarked as a Driver for the 2nd Section of the 3rd Division Ammunition Column, and was sent overseas to England.

Taken on strength by his unit in England on 28 Aug 1916, he travelled with his unit to France on 24 Nov 1916.

Bruce was granted a Paris furlough from 11 - 17 Nov 1917, and another in England from 23 Feb 1918. The later leave period ended when he was hospitalised in the 39th General Hospital (Rouen) with Venereal Disease on 11 Mar 1918 while returning to his unit. He remained in hospital until 5 July 1918 (117 days ineffective service), when he was released to the Australian General Base Depot at Rouelles.
