War Service
A month after entering camp, Bruce was allocated to the Artillery Corps, with his training in Australia then being provided at Broadmeadows camp in Victoria. On 1 Jun 1916 he was earmarked for the 3rd Division Ammunition Column, 2nd Section, and was sent overseas to England.
Taken on strength by his unit in England on 28 Aug 1916, he travelled with his unit to France on 24 Nov 1916.
Bruce was granted a Paris furlough from 11 - 17 Nov 1917, and another in England from 23 Feb 1918. The later leave period ended when he was hospitalised in the 39th General Hospital (Rouen) with VD on 11 Mar 1918 while returning to his unit. He remained in hospital until 5 July 1918 (117 days ineffective service), and was again hospitalised on 15 Jul 1918.
Bruce remained in France at Le Havre until 18 Apr 1919, before returning to Australia via Codford. Disembarking in Melbourne, he returned to Perth by rail.
Discharged 5th Military District 16 Oct 1919.
Post War
Bruce married Alice Kathleen Sterne Church in 1927.
Electoral Roll entries - 1925 - 1937 a swamper living in Pemberton; 1943 - 49 in Jardee as a greaser. Kathleen continued to reside there until after 1968.
