Pre War
Charles had married Rose Beggs in Perth during 1900. A daughter, Lillian May was born in Perth during 1901, and a second daughter Una Edith during 1905 in Fremantle. Rose died 16 Oct 1959 in Subiaco. Electoral Roll entries - 1903 - 1906 he and Rose are living in Waroona, a mill hand at Waroona No4 Mill; 1912- 1914 a faller at Nanga Brook; 1916 Ecclesbourne street, Cottesloe.
War Service
After three months training in Western Australia, Charles embarked for England aboard HMAT A35 Berrima, disembarking on 16 Feb 1917. During the journey he spent from 6 - 22 Jan 1917 in the Ship's Hospital, but the nature of his illness is not in his records. On his arrival he was sent to the 3rd Training Battalion in Dorrington, but eight days later he was admitted to the Parkhouse Hospital with mumps. On 13 Apr 1917 he returned to the 3rd Training Battalion until he departed for France from Folkestone on 14 May 1917.
A fortnight later he was taken on strength by the 11th Battalion, one of 76 reinforcements that joined them on the day at Ribemont. His records suggest that he had a trouble free time until 13 Aug 1918 when he embarked for furlough in England. He rejoined the battalion on 26 Mar 1918. On 1 Feb 1919 he was appointed temporary driver until he embarked for England in Le Havre on 24 Apr 1919, disembarking next day at Southampton. Following processing he was sent home to Australia where he was discharged by the 5th Military District on 15 Aug 1919.
Post War
Electoral Roll entries - 1922 a faller at Bush Landing, Jarrahdale; 1925 Nanga Brook Bush, faller, then moved to 77 Townsend road, Subiaco, still a faller; 1936 at No.2 Railway Mill Bush; 1937 - 1943 back at 77 Townsend road, Subiaco, timberworker; 1954 - 1958 retired at Townsend road.
