Curnow enlisted, aged 18 in the CMF on 4 May 1942 and was a member of the 8th Supply Personnel Company from 8 May 1942 until 8 June when he was posted to 15th Detail Issue Depot where he was assessed as a Trade Group III Clerk on 3 Oct 1942. Andrew was transfered to the 37th Australian Company AASC on 18 Apr 1943, and changed his designation to 2nd AIF on 10 May 1943.


On 26 Apr 1944 he was moved to Victoria, and soon after on 28 Jun 1944 he was admitted to 48th Australian Camp Hospital for treatment of Varicella. On 2 Aug 1944 he was transferred to Stonnington Depot and on the 10th he was transferred to the 3rd Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare) in Queensland.
