David enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 23 Oct 1940 at Claremont and was sent first to the Recruit Training Depot at Ascot on 25 Oct 1940. On 25 Nov 1940 he was transferred to the No. 3 Training Battalion at Northam, and on 27 Nov 1940 he was posted to the [[2/4th Australian Machine Gun Battalion]]. From 1 - 8 Jul 1941 he was granted pre-embarkation leave, and on 12 July he embarked on [[HMT Katoomba]] for Adelaide, disembarking there on 17 Jul 1941 where the Western Australian sub unit joined those raised in other states to form the battalion proper. On 22 Aug 1941 David was admitted to the [[Woodside Camp Hospital]] with Influenza Myalgia. However his condition did not improve and on 9 Sep 1941 they transferred him to the [[Wayville Camp Hospital]], suffering with Rhematic Fever, Acute Rheumatisn and Bronchio Pneumonia.

On 9 Dec 1941 David was admitted to the [[110th Australian Base Hospital]] for treatment ofr Rheumatic Fever. WHile in hospital, David was AWOL from midnight on 28 Dec 1941 until Midnight 4 Jan 1942. Guilty, he was fined 5/- (50cents), and forfeited 7 days pay. (Total loss was 42/- [$4.20]). On 5 Mar 1942 David was released to the [[109th Australian Convalescent Depot]]. Recovered, he was discharged as 'Medically Unfit, not occassioned by his own default' on 10 Apr 1942.
