Provisionally allocated to the 19th reinforcement draft for the 16th Battalion, on 3 Jul 1916 he was seen by an Australian Medical Corps unit in Claremont who diagnosed a vascular problem and he was referred to the 8th Australian General Hospital in Fremantle the same day.

Suffered with palpitations and shortness of breath, the recommendation of the Medical Board was discharge on medical grounds - disability a pre existing vascular disease of the heart.
