On 26 Sep 1941 he was assessed as Trade Group II Driver Mechanic, and on 28 Feb 1942 he volunteered to join the 2nd AIF with a new Army Number - WX30530. From 30 Nov 1942 until 25 Aug 1942 he was detached to a Labour Company, and from 30 Nov 1942 until 4 Feb 1943 to the Harvey Garrison. On 10 May 1943 he was detached to the 66th Australian Anti Aircraft Searchlight Battery, remaining with them until 30 Mar 1944.
