On 16 Jul 1942 Raymond was mobilised (As a teacher he was exempt), having already enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Mundijong on 26 Apr 1942, and having been allocated to the [[2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion]]. On 1 Jul 1942 he was transferred to the [[12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion]] until 14 Aug 1942 when he appears to have transferred back to the [[2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion]].
