Enlisted at Swanbourne on 23 Jul 1941 where he was taken on strength by the 5th Australian Garrison Battalion. On 13 May 1942 Ernest was transferred to the 29th Australian Garrison Battalion. Classed as proficient and therefore entitled to proficiency pay on 1 Jul 1943, on 5 Apr 1944 he was transferred to 5th Australian Base Workshop.
