On 6 Jul 1943 Fred was appointed Lance Corporal, and a month later on 7 Aug 1943, he boarded [[USAT Charles P. Steinmetz]] for Milne Bay in New Guinea, disembarking on 10 Aug 1943. On 5 Sep 1943 the battalion landed on 'Red Beach' north of Lae and advanced to the Busu River. On 10 Sep 12943 Fred was wounded in action attempting to cross the Busu River, but quickly returned to duty as on 25 Oct 1943 he was wounded in action a second time, this time with a penetrating shell wound to his back. He was evacuated the same day to the [[2/3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station]], and then on 28 Oct 1943 he was transferred to the [[2/5th Australian General Hospital]] for treatment for his injury and also dermatitis to his back, groin and trunk. Released from hospital on 27 Nov 1943 to the [[New Guinea Details Depot]] on 19 Jan 1944 Fred was embarked on [[SS Van Heutsz]] in Finchhafen, and disembarked in Townsville on 28 Jan 1944. Fred had been promoted Corporal on 20 Jan 1944 and was granted profciency Pay from 1 Jul 1943. This pay allowance stopped when he was promoted, and his Corporal rank was confirmed on 6 Apr 1944.

War Service

Fred had enlisted in the AMF with number W4878 on 11 Sep 1940, and was alloted to the 5th Anti Aircraft Battery. From 11 - 15 jan 1941 he was admitted ot the 110th Australian Base Hospital and on 5 AUg 1941 he was appointed as a Lance Bombadier. In october / November 1941 he was granted leave, returning to his unit on 7 Nov 1941. On 24 Nov 1941 he was granted a discharge on compassionate grounds.


However, on 29 Dec 1941 he had re-enlisted, this time in the 2nd AIF. On 5 jan 1942 he was sent to the Recruit Training Battalion at Northam. While in training, he was posted on 9 Jan 1942 tot he reinforcemens for the 2/16th Battalion. On 28 Feb 1942 he was promoted Acting Corporal and soon after on 18 Mar 1942 he was posted to K Battalion, 4th Military District'. Ten day's later he was posted to the No 1 Special Battalion to undertake special guard duties, serving fort a time int he 1st and 3rd detachments.
