Pre War
During 1942 Fred married Margaret May Young. His electoral roll entry for 1943 was 212 High street, Fremantle, soldier.
War Service
Fred was mobilised 9 Jan 1941 on a part time basis. His father Martin Adolphious Wilton was his NOK at that time. From 30 Sep 1941 Fred was engaged on a full time basis, and on 6 Oct 1941, as a Corporal, Fred joined the 121st Australian Reserve Motor Transport Company from 44th Australian Infantry Battalion (West Australian Rifle Regiment). From 8 Dec 1941 until 15 Jan 1942 he was detached to the 28th Australian Infantry Battalion (The Swan Regiment) and on 19 Mar 1942 he transferred to HQ 12th Lines of Communication Sub Area (Perth). He was then transferred to the 44th Australian Infantry Battalion (West Australian Rifle Regiment) on 24 Jun 1942, but on 16 Jul 1942 moved again, this time to the 29th Australian Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery.
He was deployed to the 420th Gun Station on 22 August, but was moved back to the Battery HQ on 3 Sep 1942 where he remained until he was posted to the 423rd Gun Station on 22 Jan 1943 and at some point to the 419th Gun Station as he left them on 9 Nov 1943 to join the 2nd Australian Special Radio Detachment. Fred then enlisted in the 2nd AIF with Army Number WX31787 and on 3 Mar 1944 he transferred to HQs of the 8th Australian Anti Aircraft & Fortress Company. He remained with them and undertook some specialist training in Victoria until 26 Mar 1945 when he was transferred to the 1st Water & Power Supply Section as a Trade Group III Engine Hand. On 12 Apr 1945 he was posted to the 1st Royal Australian Engineers Training Centre's 1st Battalion in NSW, before transferring on 28 Sep 1945 to 68th Australian DCRE (Works) arriving in WA on 3 Oct 1945. On 13 Nov 1945 he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot to prepare for discharge. This took place on 23 Nov 1945.
