Pre War
On 2 Apr 1911 he and his parents were living at Barnacle with Bonds, Lancashire, England. On 24 Aug 1918 with his mother and two siblings he boarded the SS City of Karachi in Plymouth for Australia. In 1925 they were living at 311 Hay street, Subiaco, Western Australia. In Fremantle on 3 Sep 1927 he married Lily Sidwell Woolcock, and in 1928 a son Keith Richard Phillipson (1928–2009) was born. At the time of enlistment they were living in Armadale, but by 1943 Lily was living in Fremantle.

Enlisted at Claremont camp.
