Pre War

On 2 Apr 1911 he and his parents were living at Barnacle with Bonds, Lancashire, England. On 24 Aug 1918 with his mother and two siblings he boarded the SS City of Karachi in Plymouth for Australia. In 1925 they were living at 311 Hay street, Subiaco, Western Australia. In Fremantle on 3 Sep 1927 he married Lily Sidwell Woolcock, and in 1928 a son Keith Richard Phillipson (1928–2009) was born. One other child arrived before his enlistment in the Army. At the time of enlistment they were living in Armadale, but by 1943 Lily was living in Fremantle.

War Service

Enlisted in the 2nd AIF general reinforcements at Claremont camp on 9 May 1941, and on 12 May he was transferred to the AASC Training Depot. From 26 - 30 May he was receiving treatment from the 75th Australian Camp Hospital, and by 12 Sep 1941 he had completed his training. On 7 Nov 1941 he boarded ship LL from Convoy US 13 (Queen Elizabeth or Queen Mary) and sailed for Suez on 8 Nov 1941, disembarking there on 23 Nov 1941. On arrival he was posted to HQ ASC 7th Brigade. However, on 3 Feb 1942 he was again on the move, boarding SS Mathura for Adelaide, via Colombo and disembarking on 23 Mar 1942. Granted leave from 26 Apr 1942 until 21 May 1942, he was posted to the 125th Australian General Transport Company from 22 May to 10 Oct 1942 when he was posted to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for reassignment. In the interim he was sent to the AASC Training Depot from 20 - 30 Oct 1942.

On 3 Dec 1942 Fred was posted to the 3rd Australian Corps Troops Supply Column where on 1 Jan 1943 he was promoted Acting Corporal, with his rank being confirmed on 27 Feb 1943. On 1 May 1943 he was appointed as a Lance Sergeant. On 12 Jan 1944 a Court of Inquiry looked into his injury resulting in a bruise on is left thigh while on duty. Finding was that there was no negligence involved. From 18 Feb 1944 until 2 Apr 1944 Fred attended the No. 4 L.H.Q. Wheeled Course at Northam. On 12 Apr 1944 Fred was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot to undertake his discharge which took place on 13 Apr 1944.
