On 22 Mar 1942 Frederick enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps and was allocated to the [[2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion]]'s 'D' Company based at Armadale. Promoted Sergeant on 1 Jul 1942, he attended a weapons Course from 14 - 28 Mar 1943. On 11 Oct 1943 he was given a "Change in Allotment of Army Duty - to be Acting Platoon Commander". Fred was, along with the rest of his unit placed on the Reserve on 1 May 1945.
