Here they remained at anchor before disembarking on 14 May 1941. During the next 8 months the 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion participated in the Capture of Vichy held Lebanon and Syria, including a period of Garison duty.  On 2 Feb 1942 George embarked aboard [[SS Penrith Castle]] for Adelaide where he disembarked on 24 Mar 1942.

On 13 Apr 1942 eorge was charged with having been AWOL from 6:50am on 12 April until 6:50am the next day. He forfeited a days pay and was fined £1. George was promoted Acting Corporal on 10 Jun 1942, with the rank confirmed on 9 Oct 1942. On 12 Jun 1943 George received a Severe Reprimand for having neglected to obey Routine Orders. On 3 Aug 1943 George was appointed Lance Sergeant, and the same day was sent to the First Australian Army's Weapon Training School, rejoining his battalion on 12 Sep 1043. War Service

George enlisted in the 2nd AIF at Claremont on 16 Jul 1940, and three days later he was sent to the Naval Base Training Depot. Following basic training, on 23 Sep 1940 he was transferred to the 2/3rd Australian Machine Gun Battalion at Northam, and on 29 Oct 1940 they entrainred for South Australia. MNothing untoward took place during his training there withthe exception of a 1 day visit to the Woodside Camp Hospital on 12 Mar 1941. On 25 Mar 1941 he was granted pre-embarkation leave back in Western Australia.
